Happy Easter!

Easter is a celebration of hope, renewal, and light. It reminds us that spring always follows winter, day follows night, and goodness ultimately triumphs over evil.

May this holiday bring bright thoughts, inspire creativity, and help you discover a touch of magic in even the smallest moments of everyday life.

This year, our festive spirit is accompanied by the documentary film Sacrum and Profanum in Pievėnai (dir. Giedrė Beinoriūtė), which tells the story of a unique Holy Saturday tradition — the guarding of the cross — dating back to the 19th century. At the heart of the film is a community united by living history and a longing for the sacred.

We are proud that many members of the LMTA community contributed to the making of this film:

– Director, LMTA Associate Professor and Senate member Dr. Giedrė Beinoriūtė,

– Producer and National Film School (KIMO) Coordinator Jurga Gluskinienė,

– National Film School (KIMO) Associate Professor Saulius Urbanavičius,

– and other colleagues.

Wishing you a joyful, peaceful, and hope-filled Easter!

Artificial intelligence and the Future of Art: the InMuse Innovation Forum invites you to discuss the relationship between creativity and technology

The second edition of InMuse — the international forum on innovation in music, stage arts, and entertainment — will take place on April 9–12, 2025, in Vilnius. Following its debut in 2023 as part of the Vilnius 700 celebration program, this year’s forum focuses on the expanding role of artificial intelligence in artistic creation, addressing issues of authorship, agency, copyright, ethics, and the future of creative ecosystems.

The forum brings together international artists, researchers, cultural producers, and entrepreneurship experts for four days of discussions, lectures, performances, and practical workshops exploring the creative and critical potential of AI technologies.

The programme includes thematic sessions on AI-assisted artistic processes, new forms of creative authorship, the legal and economic challenges posed by emerging technologies, and future-oriented perspectives on creativity and cultural innovation.

The programme also includes a seven-day workshop, LIVE SPACE, involving students and teachers from Nordic and Baltic higher education institutions. LIVE SPACE, coordinated by the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, is an international creative workshop designed to offer training for performers and creators of electronic and electroacoustic music, addressing the demands of a rapidly changing society. The main focus of the project is to equip participants with the skills and practical knowledge necessary to create and perform electroacoustic music in diverse spaces with various immersive audio setups. It emphasizes artistic development, co-creation, and the evolving role of musicians as contributors to society and cultural landscapes.

The structure of LIVE SPACE supports the open, exploratory nature of participants from diverse artistic backgrounds. The workshop blends practical and creative skills relevant to electronic and electroacoustic composers and performers. Over the course of seven days in Vilnius, students engage in hands-on learning and present performances across different venues, adapting to varying spatial audio contexts. These performances are designed to foster mutual support and collaborative artistic experiences.

Participating institutions in 2025 include the Academy of Music and Drama at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden), Oulu University of Applied Sciences (Finland), the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (Estonia), the Sibelius Academy at the University of the Arts Helsinki (Finland), the Norwegian Academy of Music (Norway), the Grieg Academy at the University of Bergen (Norway), Malmö Academy of Music at Lund University (Sweden), and the University of Iceland (Iceland).

A series of concerts complements the forum and workshop. The InMuse Opening Concert (April 9) presents works for voice, violin, live electronics, and Disklavier, highlighting the integration of AI in music performance. Two Workshop Students’ Concerts (April 11 and 12) will showcase creative outcomes from the LIVE SPACE programme, while an Workshop Teachers’ Concert (April 10) and a Free Electroacoustic Improv Night (April 7) will feature performances by project mentors and alumni. These events reflect the diversity of artistic approaches explored throughout the week and offer the public an opportunity to experience the innovative use of sound and space firsthand.

All forum sessions will be livestreamed, and both forum events and concerts will be recorded. Selected recordings will be made available on the website at a later date. The full programme of the forum and the LIVE SPACE workshop, along with additional information, is available at inmuse.lmta.lt

InMUSE and LIVE SPACE are organized by the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, with the support of the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Nordplus. Project partners include MOSAIC, an international creativity and innovation research hub based at HEC Montréal (Canada); Gallery Arka; the Lithuanian National Culture Centre; Arttech Agency Lithuania; Opera Social House; Dirty Deal Audio (Latvia); the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania; the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania; and the Association LATGA. The Strength of Artistic Partnership: A Visit from LMTA Lecturers to Kyiv

In the last week of March 2025, Professor Audrius Stonys and Associate Professor Nerijus Milerius from the National Film School of the LMTA (KIMO), along with Professor Valentinas Masalskis from the LMTA Klaipėda Faculty, visited the I. K. Karpenko-Kary University of the National Theatre, Film, and Television in Kyiv. Their visit, organized under the Erasmus+ programme, was initiated by the LMTA’s International Relations Office.

Over the course of three days, students at I.K. Karpenko-Kary University had the opportunity to engage with LMTA lecturers, participate in screenings and discussions on documentary cinema, and explore the intricacies of film production, from concept to screen. The sessions also covered the challenges and possibilities of filmmaking in wartime conditions, as well as lectures on acting techniques.

This visit marks another chapter in the ongoing collaboration between LMTA and the Kyiv university. When the war broke out, a group of film and theatre students from Kyiv had already been studying at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, further strengthening the bond between the two institutions.

“Our university feels a strong connection and deep appreciation for the support from our Lithuanian partners. We share a common goal: fostering sustainable development, advancing joint research in the arts, educating students, refining their skills, and nurturing the friendship between our schools. This partnership also contributes to strengthening Ukraine’s presence in Europe and the world,” said Associate Professor Inna Kocharan, Rector of the University of Kyiv, during a special meeting with the Lithuanian delegation.

During the visit, Giedrė Kabašinskienė, Senior Specialist of the LMTA International Relations Office, met with Kyiv University faculty and administrators to discuss the opportunities provided by the Erasmus+ programme. The discussion aimed to encourage the university’s academic and research staff to participate more actively in international mobility programmes.

As part of their cultural exchange, the Lithuanian guests attended a student performance titled Risk at the Arlekino Puppet Theatre and the production of Martin Eden at the I.K. Karpenko-Kary University Educational Theatre.

“The Karpenko-Kary community extends its sincere gratitude for the insightful meetings and engaging lectures. We deeply admire our partners and friends from Lithuania and eagerly anticipate their return! Ačiū!” concluded Olha Poltavets, Head of International Relations at Kyiv University, with a heartfelt Lithuanian thank you—Ačiū.

Early Music Week – Premiere of an Opera-Ballet from Paris and Baroque Disco

17-22 March The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA) will host the “Early Music Week 2025”, which aims to promote the music of the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque, and will bring together students from 10 European schools of music and art to create an opera-ballet “Les Elements” in Vilnius.

A team of the most prominent foreign and Lithuanian early music professionals has been assembled especially for this project: tenor Dominique Vellard (France), who has been awarded the French Legion of Honour for his services to early music, artistic director of the Gilles Binchois ensemble, tenor Dominique Vellard (France), Fabio Bonizzoni (Italy), one of the greatest Italian harpsichordists and organist of his generation, who has won the highest awards of the Gramophone Awards, and Dr. Elizabeth Svarstad (Norway), baroque violinist Judyta Tupczyńska (Poland) and artistic director and baroque singer Dr. Rūta Vox (Vosyliūtė) (Lithuania).

“On 21 March – Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday – the Day of Early Music is celebrated all over Europe, and the LMTA Early Music Week will celebrate this occasion in Lithuania with a joint project of students from ten European music schools (Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Italy, Germany, Norway, Poland, Latvia, Estonia) – the aforementioned opera-ballet “Les Elements”. This is an extraordinary opportunity for Lithuanian students to gain experience from more experienced colleagues and at the same time deepen their understanding of early music and its performance. Early Music Day is celebrated together with the European Early Music Network REMA,” says Beatričė Baltrušaitytė, one of the initiators of the Early Music Week project and the project coordinator.

The programme of events of the LAMT’s Early Music Week will include educational events, such as the dance evening “Baroque Vibes, Disco Moves”, during which Edmundas Žička, a historical dance professional, will introduce the dances of the European court of the Baroque period, i.e. the counter-dances. To extend the dance evening and move to the rhythm of disco, composers Domantas Pūras and Ignas Šoliūnas will be invited to dance to the rhythm of electronic music, playing the most famous Baroque themes at the DJ console.
The participants of the project “Early Music Week 2025” are organising an exclusive early music event, where they will invite you to listen to the works of Renaissance and Baroque composers and to get acquainted with historical musical instruments in the corridors of the LAMT’s II Palace (Vilniaus str.6-2).

In cooperation with the French Institute in Lithuania, the Vilnius Academy of Arts, the Palace of the Grand Dukes Museum and the 11th International Marco Schacchi Early Music Festival, the activities of the LAMT’s Early Music Week will culminate in a series of events for the participants, L’Air, the international baroque orchestra, will be celebrated with the final event – the opera-ballet Les élémens (The Verses, 1721) by French composers André Cardinal Destouches and Michel-Richard Delalande. In the Grand Renaissance Menorah of the Palace of the Grand Ducal Palace.

The opera-ballet was first performed on 31 December 1721 at the Tuileries Palace, Paris, with King Louis XV himself dancing. Later, in 1725, the work was presented to the general public at the Palais-Royal theatre in Paris and remained popular for many years. According to musicologists, this work is highly symbolic in the history of French Baroque music: it is Louis XV’s last appearance on stage, M.R. Delalande’s last work for the stage and the last opera-ballet to be performed in a French palace, which was later transferred to public theatres.
“This is the first performance of this opera-ballet in Lithuania. Since the opportunity to perform Baroque operas for LAMT students came in 2020, along with the creation of a new specialization in the singing department, it is also a challenge to select and adapt Baroque operas for our students every year. This opera impressed with its melodiousness, its refined 18th century French style, its dances, and also with the composition of the singers, the tessitura of the voices and the number of characters. Preparing for the production of such an opera is a long and difficult process. First of all, it was necessary to study the manuscript of the opera, then to rewrite it and adapt it to the performers. To perform an early 18th century French opera-ballet, to touch such a genre and to realise the Baroque singing, Baroque dancing, gestures taught in the studios, and to perform all this with the orchestra of the students of the European early music departments, which has been formed especially for this event – this is not only an exceptional opportunity for the students of the LMTA, but also a dream! Meanwhile, for opera lovers, it is a great opportunity to see and hear the rarely performed genre of French opera-ballet,” says Dr. Rūta Vox (Vosyliūtė), the initiator of the opera-ballet Stichia and a lecturer of Baroque opera at the LMTA.

“This is the second year that the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre is organising the Early Music Week in cooperation with the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, the International Marco Schacchi Early Music Festival, the French Institute in Lithuania, the Gilles Binchois Association, Erasmus+, the Vilnius Academy of Arts and the European Music Schools.

ContemPLAY: Exploring New Dimensions of Sound in Vilnius

On 2-7 February, the ContemPLAY International Festival-Workshop turned Vilnius into a true oasis of contemporary experimental and improvisational music. For the third time, the initiative was organised by the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, bringing together not only a series of concerts, but also workshops, discussions and open improvisational music sessions.

The creative space of the festival was shaped by the lecturers of the Lithuanian Academy of Music – Prof. Vykintas Baltakas, Assoc. Prof. Liudas Mockūnas and Assoc. Prof. Mantautas Krukauskas. Students of contemporary music from eight foreign universities took part in the workshops, giving the event an international flavour and a flow of new ideas.

The programme included a variety of concerts and improvisational sessions in Vilnius’ cultural spaces: from the inspiring opening “welcomePLAY” concert at the Lithuanian Composers’ Union to experimental performances featuring premieres of works and unexpected experiments in sound research. In the evenings, free improvisation sessions “JamPLAY” took place in the dome space of the Lukiškės Prison, inviting both the participants of the events and all music lovers to join the creative process.

The festival culminated with the closing concerts at the Central Palace of the LMTA, where international artists and sound creators met, leaving a deep impression on both music enthusiasts and critics.

Presentation of Arūnas Žebriūnas’ restored films and LMTA KIMO at the Belfort Film Festival “Entrevues” (France)

On 21-25 November, LMTA National Film School (KIMO) third-year students Eglė Navickaitė, Gabrielė Česevičiūtė, Samanta Molevičiūtė and Urtė-Marija Praniauskaitė, and fourth-year student Simas Narušis took part in the 39th Belfort Film Festival “Entrevues” in France. The students of Film Dramaturgy and Film History and Criticism were accompanied by film industry professionals, lecturers Rasa Paukštytė and Aistė Račaitytė.

During their stay, the students introduced the festival audience to the work of director Arūnas Žebriūnas and three of his films restored at the Lithuanian Film Centre – Gražuolė (Beautiful), Last Day of the Holiday (The Last Day of the Holiday) and Naktibalda (Nightingale). These screenings were part of the Lithuanian Season in France 2024. Žebriūnas’ works have been praised for their unique style of poetic cinema and sensitive narratives that have inspired several generations of filmmakers. During the presentation, students shared their insights into Žebriūnas’ work, revealing the films’ relevance in today’s context and opening a dialogue with the festival’s young audience. Young viewers from the local community of Belphor made up the largest part of the audience of these films.

Together with the films, the delegation presented KIMO, the National Film School of the LMTA, to the festival audience. The exceptional innovative study programmes focused on the training of professionals in the contemporary film and media industry, opportunities for creative development and integration into the international film community were highlighted. The KIMO presentation was an important platform to promote this innovative institution, which is a significant step in the development of cinema in the Baltic region.

In addition to the official film and school presentations, the students had the opportunity to actively participate in the festival’s activities: they delved into the repertoire, discussions and film trends, and watched the closing ceremony and the award ceremony.

This experience was a valuable professional step for students studying film criticism and dramaturgy, as well as proof that Lithuanian cinema and LMTA KIMO are part of the international film community. The festival provided an excellent platform to showcase Lithuania’s film heritage, strengthen the links between Lithuanian filmmakers and foreign audiences and inspire new creative initiatives.

The European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA) is an international network of eight of the most prominent European music academies, initiated in 2006 by the eminent chamber music professors and promoters of the genre Hatto Bayerle (viola, Germany) and Johannes Meissl (violin, Austria).

ECMA is Europe’s young talent authority. It focuses on established chamber ensembles such as string quartets, piano trios and others. To promote the development of the chamber music tradition, ECMA supports the best young and energetic ensembles, organises training for the most talented performers in its partner institutions, and ensures that the performers’ concert careers continue.

ECMA sessions were attended by the student string quartet “Festivo” from LMTA, the doctoral student trio “Claviola”, the graduate of the Academy, the ECMA postgraduate string quartet “Mettis”, and the prize-winning piano trio “FortVio”

CULTURE NIGHT | PIANO MUSIC CONCERT ‘IN BLACK AND WHITE’

13 June 2025, Friday
Lukiškių square, Vilnius

CULTURE NIGHT | PIANO MUSIC CONCERT ‘IN BLACK AND WHITE’

21:00–23:30 | Performances by LMTA students

00:00–01:00 | Concert “Senses and Sensations” by pianist Petras Geniušas

The origins of “In Black and White“ date back to 2009, when LMTA professor Petras Geniušas gave a recital and performed the music of L. van Beethoven in Vilnius’ Lukiškių Square during the Culture Night festival. In 2011, young pianists – the most talented students and graduates of the LMTA, whose solo performances still form the basis of the piano music marathon programme – joined the project.

The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, an institution of higher education that cherishes a deep tradition of piano music performance, presents a unique two-part project “In Black and White” as part of the the Culture Night programme. This project features performances by talented young pianists, winners of international competitions, from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. And finally, at midnight, a well known pianist Petras Geniušas will present a unique programme of his own called “Senses and Feelings”. His performance will be steeped in improvisations and compositions from the Romantic era and the 20th as well as 21st centuries.

The project is planned to be broadcast live to several Lithuanian cities.

The success of last year’s experience inspires us to continue planning a wide and relevant dissemination of this project.

Here is the last year’s broadcast, which benefited three Lithuanian cities: Marijampolė, Lazdijai and Smalininkai:

25TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “PRINCIPLES OF MUSIC COMPOSING: PHENOMENON OF SYNTHESIS”

November 12–14, 2025

25TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
“PRINCIPLES OF MUSIC COMPOSING: PHENOMENON OF SYNTHESIS”
Dedicated to the 150th anniversary of M. K. Čiurlionis

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Prof. MICHAEL FINNISSY (Composer, Emeritus Professor of Music, University of Southampton (UK) Fellow of the Royal College of Music (London))

Synthesis (Greek: Σύνθεσις—the act of placing together, the composition of a whole) is a cornerstone of any creative process or its result. This theme aims not only to encourage the exploration of the interdisciplinary interactions and their musical potentials, but also to echo the genius of the creative syntheses of the remarkable Lithuanian artist M. K. Čiurlionis on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth. This event concludes the triptych of recent conferences: the 23rd conference examined the interaction between the national and the global, the 24th one was dedicated to the ethnicity and modernity, while the 25th one invites us to delve deeper into synthesis as a phenomenon, in depths of which lie ingenious creative solutions. The latter include various, often multifaceted syntheses: ethnic, cultural, artistic, technological, ideological, etc. The task of the creator is to find that delicate balance between seemingly incompatible fields of different origins, in order to facilitate the existence of a new organic whole.

Suggested subthemes:

  • Synthesis as a source of creativity: theoretical, historical, philosophical insights
  • Syntheses and interactions of ethnic and cultural aspects in compositional practice
  • Syntheses of the arts and their varieties in musical practice: synthesis, syncretism, interaction etc.
  • Absorption and realization of different spheres in compositional practice: sound painting, illustrative, programmatic, concrete music, conceptual art, sound art, multimedia, etc.
  • Synthesis—a key factor in Čiurlionis’ genius? The interaction of different fields, arts, and cultural realities in Čiurlionis’s works.

Paper proposals (abstract of the presentation and a short biography) must be sent to the email: [email protected]. Annotation must not exceed 500 words. The approximate duration of the presentation is 20–25 min.
